Frequently Asked Questions about ESL/Linguistics 4

I tried to enroll for Linguistics 4 on Gold but the course was closed. How can I enroll in this course?

Enrollment for ESL/Linguistics 4 is through instructor approval code only during the first week of the quarter. If possible, you should attend the first session of the course. (See below if you have a course conflict at that time.)

When and where does the first session meet?

Please check the ESL Program schedule for current information about the first meeting of Ling 4 or get a schedule posted outside the ESL Office, South Hall 3507.

I have another class during the time of the first session. What should I do?

If you cannot attend the first session, contact the instructor via e-mail BEFORE the first session so that you can complete an information sheet and submit a schedule of your availability for meetings by the time of the first session. You can find faculty e-mail addresses on the ESL website.

If I have another class during that time, isn't that a course conflict?

Linguistics 4 meetings are held in small groups or individually. They are arranged based on students' course schedules. The first session time is not the regular meeting time.

Who has priority for Linguistics 4 enrollment?

The number of students wishing to enroll in Linguistics 4 is generally greater than the number of spaces available. Some students have Linguistics 4 placements resulting from: 1) the written or oral ELPE; 2) placement after taking an ESL course or 3) a TA Language Evaluation requirement. These students have highest priority for the course.

Please note: Students with Linguistics 4 priority who do not attend the first session (or contact the instructor if they cannot attend) cannot receive priority for Linguistics 4 after the quarter starts.

Why doesn't the ESL Program allow enrollment before the quarter starts?

The TA Language Evaluations take place during shortly before a new quarter begins, so the ESL Program will not know which TAs or prospective TAs have a Linguistics 4 requirement until that time. Spaces need to be saved for students required to take the course.

I have a Linguistics 4 placement and I tried to enroll in Linguistics 4 last quarter but there wasn't space. Do I have priority for the next quarter?

If you have a Linguistics 4 placement from the ELPE or from an ESL course placement and were unable to enroll in Linguistics 4 the previous quarter, please e-mail Michelle Lee (mlee@linguistics.ucsb.edu) and ask her to put you on a priority list.

May I enroll in Linguistics 4 if I do not have a Linguistics 4 placement?

If you wish to enroll in Linguistics 4 and do not have a placement or other priority, please attend the first session of Linguistics 4. During the first session, the instructor will ask you to fill out an information sheet and schedule of availability. Whenever possible, you should take any courses into which you have been placed before taking Linguistics 4 (e.g., Linguistics 2G, 3G, 5, 6, 9). Students who have taken other ESL graduate courses (either required or as electives) will generally have priority over others who do not have a Linguistics 4 placement.

I am an EAP student. May I enroll in Linguistics 4?

All EAP students are required to take the ELPE exam to enroll in any ESL courses. See the ESL website for ELPE exam information.

I am an undergraduate student. May I enroll in Linguistics 4?

In general, Linguistics 4 is for graduate students. However, exceptions are sometimes made for undergraduate students, especially upper division transfer students.

Linguistics 4 is variable credit (1-3). For how many credits should I enroll?

Enroll for 2 credits unless you have discussed with the instructor taking the course for either 1 or 3 credits.
