You will receive a reading at the last class, June 3. Please
study the reading and prepare to write an analytical response essay. We will
not discuss the reading in class.
Reminder: The final is worth a set
percentage (15%) of your final grade. You do get a grade on the final (it is
not graded "pass/fail"). But it is NOT the final grade for the class.
If you have an exam conflict you must
bring proof of the conflict to the Writing Program Office and you can take the
exam at an alternate time.[1]
Students who miss the exam for other reasons (e.g. you sleep in) cannot take it
at the alternate time and will lose that part of the grade.
Bring the following to the exam:
* the reading
* blue book(s)
* pen(s)
* a photo ID
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Q: Can I use a dictionary?
A: Yes, you can use a dictionary and Hacker; however, you cannot use
electronic dictionaries as it's too hard to keep track of what else might be in
the memory of such devices.
Q: What is the best way to study for this exam?
A: Students are welcome to have study groups, to write on
the readings, to read them over and over.
You may not discuss the reading with your instructor or any CLAS tutor.
Q: What will the question be?
A: You will get the prompt for the exam at the exam itself.
You should not try to pre-write the exam.
Q: Should I write a draft first, and then revise for my
final copy?
A: You are certainly welcome to do that if you can manage your time. But
see the next item.
Q. Do I have to double-space?
A. Double-spacing is recommended solely for your benefit. If
you have spaces between the lines, and margins on four sides of the text, you
will be better able to edit by writing additions or corrections in these
spaces. You will not be penalized if you write single-spaced.
Q: Is there a length requirement for the essay?
A: There is no requirement.
Q: Do I have to use the full two hours?
A: You do not have to use the full 2 hours.
Q: What if I need extra time?
A: Students with a disability who request more time or other
assistance must be registered with the DSP office to get special requests. Get
a copy of a letter from the DSP (this is standard procedure) and then get that
letter to the Writing Program office which will handle the arrangements.
Q: If I bring chocolate brownies to my instructor, will it
improve my chances on the final?
A: Nice try. The exam will be graded by another faculty
member and will not be graded by your instructor.
[1] An alternate
Final--ONLY for those who have another exam at the same time--will be held at
12:00 on June 6th at SH 1430.
