Introduction to Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language

Planning to go abroad? Here from another country? Thinking about teaching ESL in the U.S.? Learn about the foundations of teaching English to speakers of other languages here and abroad, including opportunities for hands-on experience.

This 4-credit course introduces theory and practice related to the teaching of English as a second language (ESL) in English-speaking countries and English as a foreign language (EFL) in other countries. The course starts with an overview of second language acquisition and consideration of learner variables. Students learn about teaching methods through readings, discussion, guest presentations and hands-on activities. They evaluate a variety of teaching materials, including websites, observe second language classrooms, have opportunities for tutoring experience, and develop classroom lessons. They learn more about professional opportunities in the field of TESL and TEFL.
